Examination Technician

The following are the duties of an Examination Technician at the NB-IV. If you are selected at a lower band level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position. Perform technician work in support of examinations of large banks. Applies a practical knowledge of the banking industry such as the bank examination process and consumer compliance programs in order to perform transaction testing, quality control reviews, non-complex Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) investigations, and review of audit reports and ratings to assess effectiveness of audit programs. Perform specialized technical work such as preparing data for automated financial systems, writing summaries of audits or financial reports, and recommending conclusions. Analyze bank requests for increases in fixed assets, other real estate owned (OREO) extensions, and dividend payments. Conduct research of laws and regulations to prepare for bank examinations and other bank-supervision related assignments, and searches external sources for financial news releases specific to assigned banks. Respond to information inquiries from banks on a wide range of topics. Prepare custom uniform bank performance reports, correspondence, documents and a variety of other reports in support of bank examinations. Review and/or track exam work papers, preliminary information for quarterly reviews from databases, loan files, and external sources. Assist with scheduling and tracking bank assignments, training and other assignments. Monitor examination workdays and budget items. Trace financial transactions, identifies discrepancies, and prepare spreadsheets to reflect the source(s) of discrepancies, and corrective actions required. Compile and verify the accuracy of financial data (audit report findings, Call Reports, and FinCen download data) to be included in memos, reports, schedules, and comparative analyses. For the NB-III:
You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the NB-II band level or GS-3 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience for this position include:
Performing financial support functions such as locating and assembling financial information or data, maintaining files and records related to financial transactions or processes, and using financial software to maintain and compile information.ORYou may substitute education for specialized experience as follows:
Four years of education above the high school level in any field obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, college or university.ORYou may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.For the NB-IV:
You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the NB-III band level or GS-5 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience for this position include:
Researching, assembling, and analyzing financial data to validate financial statements or reports; AndProcessing financial transactions, creating and maintaining financial spreadsheets/ accounts, and resolving account discrepancies;OROne full year of graduate education meets the requirements where it is directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement.ORAn equivalent combination of education and experience.The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector, or through volunteer service. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
