Program Specialist

The incumbent works independently and has multiple responsibilities with varying degrees of complexity, which require:
knowledge of Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Hospitals (TJC) Standards, the medical By-Laws, and VHA credentialing and privileging (C&P) requirements for processing of initial and renewal packets and scopes of practice; application of the compliance knowledge in the risk analysis of documents submitted for the C&P process and information obtained from mandated queries. The incumbent works in support of the Medical Staff Coordinator, enabling him/her to administer the medical staff program at the SFVAMC. TJC Standards, VHA Directives and the VHA Patient Safety Program, plus heightened attention by the public sector, requires quality credentialing involving an investigative process that analyzes and verifies multiple data points entered by providers into the VetPro electronic credentialing system. The incumbent serves as a Program Specialist in the Medical Staff Office, which is responsible for ensuring compliance with Credentialing and Privileging (C&P) requirements of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the medical By-Laws, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (TJC), and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Incumbent's duties include but are not limited to:
screening the applicant's required forms and documents for compliance with VHA regulations, the medical By-Laws, and TJC standards. investigate and prevent fraudulent data as well as assisting in the completion of the documents necessary to credential and privilege the individual. conduct ongoing risk analysis which looks for inconsistencies in the provider's work and personal history, licensure discrepancies, malpractice events, adverse actions, criminal violations, etc. analyzes all malpractice events, judgments and/or settlements. completes primary source verification of all current and past state licenses and drug enforcement certification, various education (medical, dental, podiatric, optometric, nursing and psychology degrees, etc.), various training (internship, residency, fellowships, advanced degrees, educational commission for foreign medical graduates, etc.), allegations of malpractice, continuing medical education, board ce1iifications, current and past privileges at other medical facilities. completes mandated National Practitioner Data Bank, and Federation of State Medical Boards screening prior to presentation of the practitioner to the Physician's Professional Standards Board and Medical Executive Board meetings. ensure credentialing and privileging packets are completed and processed in a timely manner. prepares official board action for review and approval of the Physician's Professional Standards Board, Chief, HRMS, Chief of Staff, and Director. coordinates credentialing and privileging matters and works closely with Administrator Officers within various services. updates privileging databases and on a monthly basis, to ensure that reappointment of current privileges are timely. independently provides statistical support via the preparation of a Medical Staff Office spreadsheet with corresponding analysis. serves as purchasing agent for credit card transactions and maintains tickler file for all credit card bills processed. Specialized Experience for GS-9:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-7 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
knowledge of clinical credentialing and privileging requirements; organizing and retrieving information, correspondence and numerical data for use in reports and briefings; using office automation software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Outlook (e-mail), Excel, and PowerPoint); ability to interpret procedures, policies and regulations of a medical facility. Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have have successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or an LL.B. or J.D. in a related field that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education (in excess of the first year or 18 semester hours) and specialized experience to meet total experience requirements. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
